Churchillians in 2011 - public appointments and awards

The College Council sends its warmest congratulations to the following:

Knighthood for Churchill Fellow

Professor Bob Edwards (Fellow in Physiology) was awarded a Knighthood in the Birthday Honours list.

Appointment to Royal Academy of Engineering

Professor Sir Michael Gregory (Fellow in Manufacturing and Management) has been appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Appointment to a Chair

Dr Dominic Wyse (former Fellow in Education, and Director of Music-Making) has been elected to a Chair at the Institute of Education in London.

Two Awards

Professor Mike Ashburner has been awarded both the 2011 Accomplishment by a Senior Scientist Award by the International Society for Computational Biology, and the 2008 Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal by the Genetics Society of America.

Professorship for Churchill postgraduate

Dr Michael Barratt (former postgraduate) has been promoted to a Professorship at the Judge Business School.

Readership promotions

Dr Alex Webb (Fellow in Plant Sciences since 2001), Dr Neshan Wickramasekera (Fellow in Maths since 2007), and Dr Boping Yuan (Fellow in Chinese and Linguistics since 1998) have been promoted to Readerships.

Senior Lectureship promotion

Dr Tiago Cavalcanti (Fellow in Economics since 2007) has been appointed to a Senior Lectureship in the Faculty of Economics.

Queen's Police Medal

Mr Stephen Love (former undergraduate) has been awarded the Queen's Police Medal.

New Fellows of the Royal Society

Professor Rob Kennicutt (Fellow in Astronomy since 2006) and Professor Sir Colin Humphreys (former postgraduate) have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society.

Engineering Medal

Our distinguished senior Fellow Professor Tony Kelly (Fellow since 1960) has been awarded the 2011 President's Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering.

George W Morey Award for 2011

Professor Neville Greaves (former By-Fellow) has been awarded the 2011 George W. Morey Award from the American Ceramic Society.

Lectureship appointment

Dr Alan Strathern (Fellow in History) has been appointed to a CUF Lecturership in history at Brasenose College, Oxford.

Young Global Leader for 2011

Badr Jafar (former undergraduate) has been named a Young Global Leader for 2011 by the World Economic Forum.

Young Researcher Award

Dr Maria Eriksson, By-Fellow, has been awarded the Young Researcher Award from Umea University, Sweden.

Smith-Knight and Rayleigh Knight Prizewinners

Sam Rabin and Daan Van Sommeren, both postgraduate students, have been awarded a Smith-Knight and Rayleigh Knight prize for 2011.

Head of Archaeology and Anthropology

Professor Nick Mascie-Taylor (Fellow since 1980) has been appointed Head of the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology for four years from 1 August 2011.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor

Professor Jeremy Sanders (postgraduate, 1969) has been appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Institutional Affairs at Cambridge University from 1 October 2011.

House of Lords

Baroness Sal Brinton (undergraduate, 1981), who took her seat in the House of Lords in February 2011. Sal is the second Churchill alumnus to be appointed to the House of Lords: the other is Lord (Colin) Low, a crossbencher.

Appointments for Junior Research Fellows

We are delighted to report that two of our Junior Research Fellows have been elected to distinguished posts elsewhere: Dr Amaleena Damlé to a Teaching and Research Fellowship at Girton College from 1 October 2011, and Dr Nick Tosca to a Lectureship in Earth Sciences at the University of St Andrews from 1 November 2011.
