After graduating from St John's College in 1953, Dick undertook a PGCert and landed his first post as Assistant Master in Classics at King William's College, Isle of Man. He then took on a post at Glasgow Academy before becoming Lecturer in Ancient History at University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland from 1961-66. This was followed by research work at King's College and then posts at the University of Ghana (1967-69), and the University of Alberta (1969-71).
Dick was elected to a Title A Fellowship at Churchill College in October 1971 following his appointment to a University Lectureship in the Faculty of Classics. He played a full and lively role in the College, being Praelector from 1975-81, and Tutor for Advanced Students from 1981-89. He was elected to a Title D Fellowship in 1993.
Following his retirement, Dick was able to spend much more time in his home in South-West France which is where he fell ill in the last month of his life.
