Professor John Arundel Barnes MA, DPhil, DSC, FBA

The College is saddened to report the death on 13 September 2010 of John Barnes. Having been an Overseas Fellow in 1965-66, John was elected to a Professorial Fellowship in 1969 on his appointment as the first holder of the Chair in Sociology in the University. He had previously held Chairs in Social Anthropology at Sydney and the ANU in Canberra. He became a Title D Fellow in 1982 on taking early retirement from the University, which left him free to continue research in Australia and this country. His anthropological studies ranged from New Guinea to Norway. His interests and writings extended across the social and political sciences and beyond. He was a familiar and well-liked figure in College.
