Wing Yip Scholarships at Churchill College

Introduction

With a generous donation from Wing Yip and Brothers (Holdings) Ltd, and co-funding from the Cambridge Overseas Trust (www.cambridgetrust.org), Wing Yip Scholarships have been established at Churchill College. The scholarships cover the University Composition Fee for a one-year MPhil degree and the College fee. They do not cover maintenance costs.

Selection

Current postgraduate students (or exceptionally, outstanding final year undergraduate students) of Peking University and Tsinghua University (only) are eligible for the Wing Yip Scholarship. The Scholarship is advertised in the two universities, who will use their own selection process to choose 5-6 candidates for each Scholarship.

The students selected will be of the highest quality intellectually and also proficient in spoken and written English, since that is the medium in which they will be taught and examined at Cambridge. They should meet the University's requirement for English as a foreign language.

Application and the admission process

Once selected by their home universities the candidates should then apply to the University of Cambridge for admission to a one-year MPhil degree course, following the instructions given here. They may apply on-line or on paper. The University of Cambridge website contains a great deal of information about postgraduate studies at Cambridge, including a list of all the courses available, and instructions for referees. The University will decide whether a student can be admitted.

Section A(4) of the Application Form asks candidates to list two colleges in order of preference. The candidates should list Churchill as their first choice. Students should state in Section B(2) of their application form how their maintenance costs will be funded: by themselves or from another scholarship. In Section B(3) candidates should state that they are applying for a Wing Yip Scholarship at Churchill College and also name any other scholarship they are applying for or have been awarded.

The final selection of scholars is made by Churchill College after students have been accepted for admission by the University of Cambridge. Students accepted for admission by the University but who are not accepted by Churchill College for the Wing Yip Scholarship will be considered for other scholarships (see here for details), or they may fund themselves if able to do so.
