You are in: Churchill College » Archives Centre » About Us

Do you enjoy bringing order out of chaos? Are you interested in twentieth century history? And are you thinking of pursuing a career in archives?
Churchill Archives Centre offers volunteer placements of one week's duration or a half-day or day per week over a longer period. A placement usually involves the following elements:
- a basic box listing and repackaging task, perhaps on a new collection, which would be the main element of the placement.
- answering some enquiries from researchers.
- a session or two shadowing the archives assistant on duty in the reading room.
- a tour of the conservation workshop.
Also, depending on what is going on during the particular period of the placement, there may be the opportunity to help out with a visiting group, including preparing a display for them.
We can offer a free lunch in Hall each day and travel expenses up to a maximum of £25 per week (or £25 per month if working a half-day or day per week over a longer period). Unfortunately, we cannot offer accommodation, so volunteers must live within commuting distance of Cambridge.
Our placements are designed for those interested in a career in archives or in a related field such as museums or libraries.
If you would like to find out more, contact us at archives@chu.cam.ac.uk, attaching a copy of your CV and marking your email for the attention of Sophie Bridges. We ask all potential volunteers to come in for a brief tour of the Archives Centre, so they can see the working environment and discuss a placement further.
Because we are a small organisation, we are only able to offer around eight to ten placements per year and we currently have placements available from summer 2013.
