Churchill Archives Centre: Major Donors

"The inheritance bequeathed to us by former wise or valiant men becomes a rich estate to be enjoyed and used by all". Winston S. Churchill, 2 July 1938.

The Churchill Archives Centre is funded largely from its own endowments and from the support it receives from philanthropic trusts and individuals. We can only fulfil our important mission to preserve and provide access to the unique collections in our care because of the generosity of our friends and patrons.

  • The Archives Centre owes its existence to the following Founding Donors.
  • The New Wing could not have been built without the support of the following donors.
  • The following trusts, individuals and institutions have provided major support to particular projects.
  • More information is also available about the current Archives Centre Capital Campaign.
  • The Archives Centre also has a Friends Appeal allowing smaller gifts and donations to be pooled to support core conservation and cataloguing projects.

The Archives Centre was built and opened in 1973 thanks to the generosity of a number of distinguished American citizens. The commemoration on the wall of the Jock Colville Hall records this gift as follows:

This Archives Centre was built and endowed by and in memory of these United States Ambassadors to the Court of St James's and other eminent Americans as a tribute to the inspiration and leadership of Sir Winston Churchill at once a British subject and an Honorary American Citizen.

The Donors to the New Wing of the Churchill Archives Centre

The New Wing of the Churchill Archives Centre was built and opened in 2002. It exists to house the papers of the Rt. Hon. Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven and to provide the Centre with the space to continue collecting important personal papers of the modern era. The names of the donors are commemorated in a band of Portland stone carved by the Kindersley studio on the exterior of the New Wing. It reads as follows:
