Fisher, Admiral of the Fleet
Lord Fisher (1841-1920), earlier John ("Jackie") Fisher
Most senior British Admiral
(First Sea Lord) during First World War, until resignation over
the Dardanelles campaign in May 1915.
Entered Royal Navy in 1854, rising to become a Rear-Admiral in 1890. Held a succession
of senior positions before becoming First Sea Lord (1904-1910). Retired,
but brought back as First Sea Lord by
Winston Churchill in 1914. Quarrelled with
Churchill over the Dardanelles operation and resigned in May 1915.
