16 Rear-Admiral John de Robeck takes over from Vice-Admiral Sackville Carden as Commander-in-Chief of naval forces.
18 Naval attack to force a passage through the Dardanelles foiled by Turkish mines. Decision taken to try a land assault.

26 70,000 troops are sent for the assault but have to be delayed because supply ships have been wrongly packed.

25 British land at Cape Helles; ANZACS at Gaba Tepe ("ANZAC bay"), though land by mistake at the cliffs of Chunuk Bair. Heavy Turkish resistance pins all attacks down on the beaches.

6-7 Further British landings at Suvla Bay. Turks are caught off-guard, but British do not follow up the attacks, and are soon pinned down on the beaches there as well.

15 Allied army commander Sir Ian Hamilton replaced by Sir Charles Monro, who immediately decides on withdrawal.
November

Fierce storms claim lives of many troops who freeze to death.
