On the 18th and 19th November 2009, just after the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Churchill Archives Centre hosted a conference on "The Cold War and its Legacy". The conference began with opening statements from the Deputy Russian Foreign Minister, His Excellency Grigoriy Karasin, and from Susan Eisenhower, the President of the Eisenhower Group, whose first experiences of the Cold War were gained growing up in her grandfather's White House. Watch their statements here. Letters were read from Lady Thatcher, Mrs Nancy Reagan, and former President Mikhail Gorbachev. Then, with the scene set, the audience was plunged into debate about the origins, challenges and legacies of nearly half a century of conflict.
Mr Hugh Lunghi, former interpreter to the British Chiefs of Staff Mission in Moscow, spoke about his experiences in translating the discussions of Churchill and Stalin; Professors Vladimir Pechatnov, David Reynolds, and David Woolner re-examined the origins of the conflict from the Russian, British and American perspectives; while Senator Warner, Franklin Miller, Lord Powell, Sir Roderic Lyne, and Alexander Likhotal spoke about their own experiences at the heart of policy. There were panels on the roles of technology and intelligence during the Cold War, and on the legacy in Europe and Asia.
Churchill Archives Centre wishes to thank all of the participants, sponsors and delegates who made this unique event possible.
