Archives Awareness: Online exhibition

John Hugill's papers include fascinating photographs of the liberation of towns in Brittany and Normandy following D Day. He captioned this one "Jack chatting up a French popsie. The Royal Marine later got a D.S.M [Distinguished Service Medal]. We wore a strange rig: khaki battle dress with R.N. shoulder flash and straps for rank and a 30 for 30 Commando, and usually a naval cap with a khaki cover. We hardly ever wore tin hats, unless shelling was heavy".
