Archives Awareness: Online exhibition

Sir Robert, later Lord, Vansittart (known as 'Van' to many of his friends), was Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs between 1930 and 1938. He was well known for his strong opposition to 'appeasement' and his independent stance so irritated Neville Chamberlain that he was subsequently replaced through 'promotion' to the new post of Chief Diplomatic Adviser to the Foreign Secretary.

As well as copies of his official papers and correspondence the Centre holds many of his published and unpublished literary works, including plays, poetry and poems.
