Los Alamos in Colour

Egon Bretscher on Black Mesa, 1958 or 1959

Egon Bretscher on Black Mesa, 1958 or 1959. Reference: BRER A. 62. a/4810

At first glance they might be everyday family snapshots. But take a closer look. Egon Bretscher's Kodachrome slides are rare colour images of the secret city of Los Alamos, where scientists worked on the atomic bomb during the Second World War.

Digital copies of 139 slides in total have been given to Churchill Archives Centre by Mark Bretscher on behalf of the Bretscher family. They have been added to Egon Bretscher's collection of papers at the Centre and a small selection of the images is available online here.
