This month we celebrate the 60th anniversary of James Watson and Francis Crick publishing the article "Molecular structure of nucleic acids: a structure for deoxyribose nucleic acid"". Published in the scientific journal Nature on 25th April 1953, this was one of the most significant articles of the twentieth century, as it described the double helix structure of DNA.
Although Crick was later to be a fellow of Churchill College, this month's image is borrowed from elsewhere in Cambridge, and is a sculptured panel, or metope, showing a double helix, from the frieze surrounding the Library at Downing College. These panels commemorate Cambridge's academic achievements, and were designed by the architect Quinlan Terry in 1993.
