Marcia Collaer is Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont, US. She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology/Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona. Her research explores factors that influence individual and sex differences in cognitive abilities, with some of her interest in behavioral sex differences stemming from her days as a rare female student of electrical engineering. More broadly, her research investigates the relationship of cognition, particularly spatial abilities and moral decision making, to both biological factors, such as steroid hormones, as well as environmental factors, such as stressors and stereotype threat. A new and entirely different area of interest relates to how principles of social psychology might be productively applied to real life problems in the sustainability of international development programs.
