Alistair Fair is an architectural historian whose research considers aspects of British architecture from the seventeenth century to the present, with a particular focus on the twentieth century. He has a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Research Fellowship in the Department of Architecture. After studying at Oxford and the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, he received his PhD from Cambridge in 2008. His thesis considered the history of British theatres between the 1920s and the 1990s. Various refereed articles and a co-written book have been published; the completion of a monograph is a long-term ambition. Alistair has also researched and published articles on twentieth-century hospital and university design. His new Leverhulme project extends his interest in non-domestic building types by considering their environmental history. He is interested in the ways in which complex public buildings have been heated and cooled (especially before the advent of mechanical/electrical systems), the reasons that justified heating and cooling strategies, and the extent to which historic strategies can be 'recovered' for contemporary use.
