Professor Bill Milne MA, FREng

Bill Milne is Head of Electrical Engineering and Director of CAPE, the Centre for Advanced Photonic and Electronics. His research interests include micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and carbon nanotubes and other 1-D structures for electronic applications. One of his recent achievements has been his contribution to the development of new miniature gas sensors, to be commercially developed by the spin-out company Cambridge CMOS Sensors Ltd. The devices have a tungsten micro-hotplate embedded in insulating material than can heat appropriate sensing material to react with gas molecules. The hotplate can rise to 600 degrees Celsius within a few milliseconds, with very low power consumption, leading the way forward toward 'ubiquitous sensing', a full profile of the atmospheres we inhabit.
