David Spiegelhalter is the "Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk" in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, Honorary Professor of Biostatistics in the Institute of Public Health, and Senior Scientist in the MRC Biostatistics Unit. He specialises in the theory and application of Bayesian statistics, and in particular started the BUGS project for popular Bayesian software. His medical work focuses on the assessment of clinical performance, and he contributed to both the Bristol and Shipman Inquiries and now consults for the Healthcare Commission. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2005 and was awarded an OBE in 2006.
