Julia's early work was in fatigue and fracture in metals. After her time at Churchill, she joined Rolls Royce, working to make jet engines more efficient and eco-friendly. She also worked on nuclear propulsion, the 'electric ship', and on the application of aero-engine technology to ships, envisaging fast cargo vessles powered by gas turbines driving waterjets. In 2007-8 she led the King Review for the government looking at decarbonising road transport, and looking ahead to ultra-low emission cars powered by electricity or hydrogen. As a member of the Committee on Climate Change she recommends the levels at which the UK's legally binding 'Carbon Budgets' should be set, and as Vice-Chancellor of Aston University she has introduced a comprehensive 'green' agenda; it's the first campus fitted with a CO2 emission metre. Another of her missions is to increase the presence of women in engineering. She remains a Fellow of Churchill.
