About CCMC

CCMC has a very relaxed and informal approach to climbing. Whatever its current form is, the University Mountaineering Club (CUMC) was relatively unfriendly to novices a few years back and so CCMC was formed to be a friendly, in-college club existing to encourage people from all sorts of backgrounds to get involved in outdoor activities. Since it's about 10 years later and we're still going strong, I think we can safely say that it's been a success.

The practical side of CCMC involves a committee who make decisions relating to what the club does. That doesn't make them scary - they're just normal people with normal climbing abilities who are enthusiastic enough to want to help run the society for others (and for themselves!). The committee watch the weather and select suitable places to go climbing or hillwalking over the weekends and also arrange the transport and accomodation for these meets. They also arrange helpful things like insurance, try to run friendly tea-and-chat sessions once in a while and are generally useful!

Most meets (i.e. trips) are arranged over email via the general club email address: someone (it doesn't have to be the committee) suggests going climbing and asks for any interested people to reply if they want to go. Assuming all is well with weather and so-on, someone will hire or borrow a car and the meet will happen - simple as that! For larger meets like the Scotland and Alps trips, there's a bit more organisation involved but nothing more obscure or formal, just a bit more needing done.

Other than that, CCMC doesn't get bogged down in administration too much. We're members of the British Mountaineering Council (who arrange our insurance amongst other things) and get a termly grant from the college to pay for admin and for upkeep of our club equipment (which is available for use by any member). All members who register themselves early in the year as interested in climbing will be put on our insurance list, so there's a good reason to turn up to our squash, just in case!

Oh good, in that case you're an Old Lag ©! Old Lags occasionally come along to CCMC meets, offer to drive us places (hint hint!) and are generally good. We'd like lags to come along to our meets if they feel like it and there's also an annual Alternative Dinner (held in early May usually) to which said fogies are invited. If you're a Lag and fancy getting back in touch, drop us an email and, if you're feeling keen, ask us to put you on our Old Lags Mailing List, cunningly mailable at the email address ccmc-oldlags@chu.cam.ac.uk
