Welcome

Churchill College is home to an active music scene which draws together much of its student, fellow, and staff membership. We enjoy an impressive range of facilities for music, including a purpose-built music centre (2007) with a Steinway Grand piano (model B) and a two-manual harpsichord made for the College by David Rubio in 1983.

The Churchill College Music Society (‘ChuMS’) maintains a large roster of active ensembles including 'Inter Alios', our Chapel Choir, which sings one service per week on Sunday evenings during term; the ‘Hill Chorus’, an unauditioned chorus singing an eclectic range of repertoire in termly concerts and other events; and the highly-regarded Churchill Jazz Band. ChuMS also maintains strong links with its neighbouring colleges in joint ventures such as the shared college orchestra (the ‘Orchestra on the Hill’), and promotes solo and smaller-scale groups, fostering a lively chamber music scene and numerous rock bands.

The ChuMS concert calendar centres on a series of regular recitals at 6.15 in the Recital Room on Fridays in full term. These recitals are given by a range of performers, including student groups, visiting professional music by-fellows, and invited, external, professional artists. Recent highlights have included a first-ever recording of music at Churchill and a performance at the world-famous venue of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, with professional soloists and orchestra.

There is a very generous range of music bursaries on offer to Churchill students. Not only does the Churchill participate in all the central university award schemes for music (offering organ, choral, and instrumental awards) but we also run annual auditions for internal college bursaries to support instrumentalists, singers, accompanists, and even choral conductors.

You can see a list of future events organised by the music society and affiliated groups on the right-hand side of the page, or by clicking on the 'Events' link in the menu bar at the left. Other events that are deemed to be of interest to the members of the society may be sent out on the music mailing list: contact us for such requests.
