Music Society Roles

• Music Sizar – Oversees the day-to-day running of the society (including sorting out music centre access for students). Sets up concerts (including Instrumental Bursary recitals, Churchill Choir concerts, chamber music concerts and professional recitals). Chairs the music society meetings along with the Director of Music-making.

• Junior Treasurer – keeps the financial accounts in order, writes cheques for reimbursements and fills out the annual CCRFC application form in conjunction with the Music Sizar.
• Churchill Choir Director – Runs Churchill Choir including choosing pieces (possibly in conjunction with the Music Sizar), looking after and getting hold of music and organising rehearsals.
• Publicity Officer – publicises all music society events to all members of Churchill College, often Hill Colleges and sometimes the whole university. Designs and prints posters and sets up facebook events.
• Webmaster – Looks after the music society website and Facebook group.
• Social Secretary – Supplies refreshments at concerts and for choir rehearsals, and organsises social events such as Formal Hall from time to time.
• Secretary – keeps minutes from the music society meetings and e-mails the society each week with a bulletin detailing musical events happening at Churchill (and sometimes elsewhere).

Music Sizar

“The Music Sizar is expected to foster the musical life of the College. In doing so they will seek to involve as many musicians as possible, including students, fellows and other College members. In performing the duties involved the Sizar will work closely with the Director of Music-Making (DoMM”).

“The Music Sizar will take active steps to seek out and encourage musical talent inside the College, and be responsible for ensuring adequate publicity for musical events. The Music Sizar will, as appropriate, liaise with musicians at other "Hill" Colleges to support, for example, The Orchestra on The Hill. The Sizar is a member of the Music Committee and should be thought of as the Committee member with the primary responsibility for initiating and organising musical activities in the College, with the support of the Committee members”.

What this actually involves:

• Chairing music society meetings (with the help of the Director of Music Making)
• Giving students access to the music centre & looking after the music centre including:
  • Organising the setting of chairs for concerts
  • E-mailing the Møller Centre to arrange for additional facilities to be available for concerts
  • Sorting out booking conflicts for Music Centre rooms that might arise
• Organising music society concerts (and setting the dates), including:
  • Music Bursary Holders’ Recital
  • Professional Recitals
  • Jazz in the Bar
  • Other ensemble concerts and helping out with the Churchill Choir concert (with the Churchill Choir director)
• Composing most of the weekly e-mail bulletin for the secretary to send out
• Organising the integration and welcoming of freshers into the music society during Michaelmas term.
• Receiving random items of musical post which the Porters put in your pigeon hole
• Making purchases in collaboration with the Junior Treasurer, authorised by the Senior Treasurer.

Churchill Choir Director

Your role is to oversee Churchill Choir rehearsals, sort out repertoire for concerts, set dates for concerts and rehearsals (in conjunction with the Music Sizar), conduct the choir for a piece or two and promote the group to college members with a view to recruiting new members every term (especially in Michaelmas term).

Publicity Officer

Your primary task is to communicate information about upcoming concerts to the members of Churchill College and surrounding hill colleges. For professional recitals, it’s worth expanding this to the whole of Cambridge.

The four main methods for doing this are producing term cards (flyers listing all upcoming events), printing posters, e-mailing people and posting on websites.

In addition you’ll need to create and print programmes for the music society concerts.

You will need to liase with the Churchill Choir director in order to get programme notes and biographies from the Churchill Choir conductors. You will need to liase with the Music Sizar to obtain information for the professional recitals and the music bursary holders recital.
