Introduction and aims

Churchill College has a strong tradition in Science. Indeed, since its foundation it has been committed to preserving its statutory requirement that 70% of its students and Fellows study science or technology. The main body of the Fellowship has included 3 Nobel Laureates (two in Physics and one in Medicine). Among the Overseas Fellows there have been 12 Nobel Laureates (in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine). Four of the five Masters College has had are eminent scientists. They are:
1. Sir John Cockcroft (1897-1967, Master 1959-67), Nobel Laureate in Physics, who split the atom.
2. Professor Sir William Hawthorne (1913-; Master 1968-83), who helped develop the jet engine, and was Head of the Department of Engineering from 1968 to 1973.
3. Professor Sir Hermann Bondi (1919-; Master 1983-90), cosmologist, who developed the Steady State theory of the universe.
4. Professor Alec Broers (1938-; Master 1990-96), nanotechnologist, who was Head of the Department of Engineering, and became Vice-Chancellor of the University in 1996.

The Churchill Scientific Society aims to help maintain and strengthen the College's scientific tradition and to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange of scientific knowledge primarily by inviting experts to give talks in College, and by organising trips to places of scientific interest. As a Churchill College Society, the Churchill Scientific Society is a non-profit-making organisation.
