Johan is a GP registrar that was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 18. Despite struggling through medical school and being cared for by his brother he was able to finally accomplish a lifetime ambition when he completed his first marathon in 2009.
Since then he has finished 10 marathons, an Ironman Triathlon and a 100km Ultramarathon. He uses his personal experiences of living and coping with Rheumatoid Arthritis when dealing with his patients in General Practice.
After presenting his experiences at the annual GP trainee conference in June 2014 he was awarded with the ‘Personal Achievement Outside of Medicine’ prize which was a fantastic opportunity to meet with his peers across London. Following this he founded the BeatYourDemons (BYD) Project; a social healthcare project designed to promote the principles of exercise in people with chronic diseases. With the primary goal of “overcoming adversity with achievement;” this resource is used by Doctors, Patients, their friends and family to help foster a patient-centred and holistic approach to managing chronic disease. In 2015 he ran 12 marathons in 12 months to raise money for Arthritis Research UK. He also accompanied his friend Jonathan King on a 1200 miles cycling journey from London to Barcelona last July to help him raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
