You and a guest are invited to join fellow alumni for a roundtable discussion on the theme of ‘Innovation in the two Cambridges\,’ which will be followed by a chance to share ideas\, and connect with fellow alumni over drinks. \n\n\n\nThe panel for the roundtable will feature the following speakers: \n\n\n\nHarry Bullivant (U06) – VP of Market Development for TTP\, a Cambridge (UK) product and technology development company. Harry works with biotech\, pharma\, and medical devices clients across the US\, as well as engaging the innovation ecosystem in Boston. Before moving to the US\, Harry was COO at LEX Diagnostics which developed a 5-minute PCR test for infectious diseases at point-of-care; LEX is due to be acquired in late 2025. \n\n\n\nRoger Burton (U05) – is co-founder and CTO of Evoworks Bio\, a biotechnology company dedicated to revolutionising the scaling process in pharmaceutical bioproduction through bioreactor clusters. Roger spent 15 years at Cambridge Consultants\, working in the UK and the US before co-founding Evoworks Bio in Cambridge Mass. He holds an EMBA from MIT Sloan School of Management. \n\n\n\nPaul Singh (G94) – co-founder and CEO of Interon Laboratories\, Inc. a biotechnology company developing therapeutics for neurological disorders\, beginning with Autism. Interon is also developing therapeutics for other neurological and immune disorders as well. Paul holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. \n\n\n\nDr Sylvia Smullin (G98) – physicist and innovation consultant who helps organizations translate research and data into impactful technology strategies. As Principal Consultant at Figured Eight Consulting\, she combines deep expertise in experimental physics and data analysis with a pragmatic\, product-focused approach to fostering innovation and R&D excellence. Her work focuses on bridging scientific rigor and creative problem-solving to drive meaningful impact\, particularly in climate and deep-tech sectors. \n\n\n\nProfessor Markus Kraft (Fellow) – Professor in Chemical Engineering and Founding Director of the Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education in Singapore. Professor Kraft is also the Director of CMCL Innovations\, a technology-intensive company\, where he is involved in the development of software for the automotive and chemical industry\, and the design of carbon-neutral fuels. \n\n\n\nThe event takes place in the 12th-floor kitchen via the entrance at 255 Main Street. DESCRIPTION:Music in the Flesh’ – Experience Baroque Music in a Distinctly Different Way \n\n\n\nJoin us for an unusual recital of music by Bach\, Corelli\, Purcell and others\, led by historical performance specialist Margaret Faultless (violin)\, alongside Rachel Stroud (violin)\, Andrew Skidmore (cello) and Nick Mulroy (tenor). \n\n\n\nHistorically\, music wasn’t always consumed in the formal concert hall settings we know today. Cambridge musicologist Professor Bettina Varwig has worked with our performers to explore new aspects of musical expression and practices of musical listening and performance. Her work informs this performance\, as she will explain in a brief introduction. \n\n\n\nThis event offers an intimate\, informal space that allows for a different kind of listening experience entirely. Rather than sitting in rows facing forward\, you’ll be mostly seated on the floor or sofas – a physical arrangement designed to open up new possibilities for how we can engage with and feel music. \n\n\n\nAs a specialist in historical performance practice\, Margaret recreates how classical music would have been performed in its own time\, often using historic instruments and techniques. This approach emphasises particular expressive and communicative qualities\, creating new interpretations and experiences of the music for you\, the audience.  \n\n\n\nThis promises to be a recital unlike any other – places are limited so please book early to reserve your place. DESCRIPTION:Thanks to support from recent graduates and current members of the club\, CCBC will be naming a newly refurbished VIII ‘Kieran Heal’ after one of our most dedicated members\, Kieran Heal (U&G16). \n\n\n\nKieran has held multiple roles in the Club\, including Junior Treasurer\, Men’s Vice-Captain\, Coxing Representative and Overall Captain (twice). Racing begins at 11:45\, and the last division is scheduled for 17:45. All Churchillians\, families\, and supporters of the College are welcome.\n\n\n\nPlease join us for some (hopefully) nice weather and lots of exciting races – last year we had a perfect view of M1 bumping to get blades\, and this year there will be up to 8 crews racing! Quider is the Founder and CEO of The Quider Group\, a strategic federal research consulting firm\, as well as an Affiliated Senior Research Fellow at Northern Illinois University. In 2022\, she was named among the top 100 lobbyists in the United States and the outstanding public research university lobbyist\, while serving as the Assistant Vice President for Federal Relations at Northern Illinois University. Her leadership includes formerly serving as president of The Science Coalition\, a national nonprofit dedicated to increasing US federal funding for fundamental scientific research\, and the top science policy advisor to the vice presidents/chancellors for research of America’s leading public research universities. Dr. Quider is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and the past-chair of the APS Forum on Physics and Society. Previously\, she worked on science and innovation policy at the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. House of Representatives\, where she was an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow and an APS Congressional Science Fellow. In 2011\, she earned a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge (Churchill College) as a UK Marshall Scholar\, US National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow\, and Cambridge Overseas Trust Scholar. DESCRIPTION:This year’s lecture will be delivered by Professor Catherine Green (U93)\, from the University of Oxford. \n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Green is a Churchill alumna\, English biochemist and recipient of an OBE for her services to science and public health. She is professor of clinical biomanufacturing at the University of Oxford\, where she heads the Nuffield Department of Medicine’s Clinical Biomanufacturing Facility and is a Fellow at Exeter College\, Oxford.   \n\n\n\nProfessor Green’s talk is entitled ‘Making Vaccines\, for the Last Pandemic and the Next One’\, and is an accessible and entertaining insight into the development of of the OxfordAstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine\, as detailed in the book Vaxxers which she co-wrote with Sarah Gilbert. \n\n\n\nThe lecture takes place at the Pfizer Lecture Theatre in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry on Lensfield Road (please note this is a different lecture theatre to previous years\, though on the same site). This will be followed by a drinks reception and dinner in College\, along with after-dinner drinks in the Cockcroft Room. See below for booking details. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur speaker: Professor Catherine Green OBE\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Green’s passion for science was solidified during her years spent studying biochemistry as an undergraduate at Churchill. She went on to receive an Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK) scholarship to complete her PhD research. Prior to joining the University of Oxford in 2012\, Green held several prestigious fellowships\, including a Marie Curie Fellowship at the Institut Curie in Paris\, where she studied DNA damage in human cells and a Cancer Research UK Research Fellowship in the Department of Zoology at the University of Cambridge. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, Professor Green specialises in creating vaccines for clinical trials. She and her team at the Clinical Biomanufacturing Facility have developed several novel vaccines for first-in-human trials\, targeting diseases such as malaria\, Ebola virus\, tuberculosis\, influenza\, Zika virus\, Middle East respiratory syndrome and rabies\, amongst others. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, Green was awarded an OBE for her services to science and public health following her significant contribution as manufacturing lead in the development of the OxfordAstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Alex Hopkins Fund\n\n\n\n\nAlex Hopkins was a student and Teaching Fellow in Chemistry at Churchill College who died tragically young in 2006. Each year\, the Alex Hopkins Fund supports the award of one or more prizes for outstanding overall achievement in the final Tripos examination in Chemistry\, as well as sponsoring an annual lecture to be held in the Department of Chemistry. \n\n\n\nAlex’s infectious enthusiasm and humour characterised his teaching and his exceptional ability to communicate his passion for science.
