SUMMARY:The Master's Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Professor Sharon Peacock CBE FMedSci CBE in conversation with Professor Dame Diane Coyle\, author of The Measure of Progress: Counting What Really Matters.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted at Churchill College\, Cambridge\, by Professor Sharon Peacock\, the Master’s Book Club series delves into some of the recent books published by members of the College. Wide-ranging discussions with the authors will shed new light on aspects of our past\, present and future that connect with how we live today. \n\n\n\nJoin us to hear from Churchill College Fellow Prof. Dame Diane Coyle in conversation with the Master of Churchill College\, Prof. Sharon Peacock\, as they discuss her latest book: The Measure of Progress: Counting What Really Matters. \n\n\n\nThe ways we measure the economy were developed in the 1940s for entirely different economic challenges. In The Measure of Progress\, Diane Coyle argues that this outdated framework functions as a distorting lens on today’s digital economy. When policymakers rely on such antiquated tools\, how can they understand and respond to current economic realities? \n\n\n\nCoyle makes the case for a new framework that reflects today’s challenges: slowed growth in living standards despite remarkable innovation\, the rising importance of intangible value\, and strained democracies. She explains why economic statistics matter – they guide policies affecting people’s lives in ways large and small\, involving questions of freedom\, justice\, life\, and death. \n\n\n\n“We should ALL read this important book. . . . While many of GDP’s shortcomings are well-known\, Coyle sets out elegantly and compellingly why these issues have now become so numerous\, and so serious\, that we should rethink radically how we measure our progress.” – Kate Barker\, The Society of Professional Economists \n\n\n\nEntry is free but this is a ticketed event and booking is essential. The event will be followed by a drinks reception at 7pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook ticket\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiane is the Bennett Professor of Public Policy at the University of Cambridge and author of Cogs and Monsters: What Economics Is and What It Should Be\, GDP: A Brief but Affectionate History (both Princeton) and many other books. She specialises in the economics of new technologies\, economic statistics\, and digital markets. She serves on the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy Advisory Council and as an adviser to the Competition and Markets Authority and has previously served as Vice-Chair of the BBC Trust. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us to hear from Churchill College Fellow Prof. Dame Diane Coyle in conversation with the Master of Churchill College\, Prof. Sharon Peacock\, as they discuss her latest book: The Measure of Progress: Counting What Really Matters.

SUMMARY:Alex Hopkins Lecture and Dinner 2026
DESCRIPTION:This year’s lecture\, ‘Keeping it Light’\, will be delivered by Dr James Dolan\, from the University of Cambridge. \n\n\n\n\n\nA light-hearted lecture about optical materials\, science comedy\, and the social science of science communication\, in memory of Alex Hopkins   \n\n\n\nScientists tend to know their stuff. James\, for example\, knows about light and how to make artificial materials (‘metamaterials’) which interact with light in unusual ways. Scientists also tend to want to share what they know with others. James\, for example\, will gladly tell you about his metamaterials. He might even attempt to do it through the medium of comedy. But scientists can have some funny ideas about what should happen when they tell the public about science. James certainly did. And social scientists\, who also tend to know their stuff\, have quite a bit to say about this. Whether or not the scientists\, including James\, are paying attention\, however\, is another question entirely. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur speaker: Dr James Dolan\n\n\n\n\nDr James Dolan is an engineer\, physicist and occasional science communicator who\, when he isn’t teaching\, researches how scientists use improvised comedy as a form of science communication. In this lecture\, he’ll teach you how to make a metamaterial (not really something you can do at home)\, introduce you to the world of science comedy (hold your breath for the scientific ‘proto-joke’)\, and offer you some insights from the social science of science communication (yes\, it does exist\, and is absolutely fascinating). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Alex Hopkins Fund\n\n\n\n\nAlex Hopkins was a student and Teaching Fellow in Chemistry at Churchill College who died tragically young in 2006. Each year\, the Alex Hopkins Fund supports the award of one or more prizes for outstanding overall achievement in the final Tripos examination in Chemistry\, as well as sponsoring an annual lecture to be held in the Department of Chemistry. \n\n\n\nAlex’s infectious enthusiasm and humour characterised his teaching and his exceptional ability to communicate his passion for science. The lectures\, although routed in science\, aim to be as much about entertaining as educating and are designed to be appealing and accessible to all. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking\n\n\n\nThe lecture takes place at the Wolfson Lecture Theatre at the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry and will be followed by a High Table in College in memory of Alex. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to attend the lecture only\, please book through the Cambridge Festival. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to attend the dinner and lecture\, please book for the dinner below and check the box on the form to be added to the lecture guest list (no need to book separately via the Cambridge Festival). \n\n\n\n\n\nDinner\n\n\n\nAlumni and non-members: please use the form at the bottom of this page to book tickets to the dinner and after-dinner drinks. You can make an additional donation to the Alex Hopkins Fund using the form. \n\n\n\n\nAlumni should select the ‘Alumni ticket’ option for themselves and up to one guest to dine (thus using their High Table dining rights to susbsidise the cost). The price includes post-dinner drinks in the Cockcroft Room.\n\n\n\nNon-members of the College are welcome to book a place at the dinner and post-dinner drinks. Please select the ‘ticket’ option.\n\n\n\nFellows should use the SCR High Table sign-up page as usual.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccommodation\n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, this event falls within the College Period of Residence\, even though it is outside of term. This means we cannot yet make rooms bookable for those wishing to stay in College until we know which rooms are being vacated. We do envisage there will be availability\, so please email the Accommodation Office with enquiries and they will assist.
