François-Xavier Désert is an astronomer working at the Institut de Planétologie et d’Astrophysique de Grenoble (IPAG, CNRS, Univ. Grenoble Alpes), France. His main areas of research are Experimental Cosmology and Interstellar Dust. The main missions he has been involved in, are IRAS, COBE, ISO, Archeops, Planck, NIKA2 and Concerto. He tackles issues related to clusters of galaxies and interstellar dust as foregrounds to the Cosmic Microwave Background.

He did his PhD at Paris University in 1986. After two post-doctoral fellowships (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, USA and Leiden University, The Netherlands), he was appointed astronome-adjoint at the Paris-Meudon Observatory. He joined Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale in Orsay in 1992 and moved to Grenoble in 1997. He was director of IPAG (150 people) from 2015 to 2020.
