The Donor Garden Party offered a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate and thank the many donors whose generosity continues to shape and support the College community. Held on Sunday 12 July, the afternoon brought together a wide range of philanthropic supporters from our alumni community for an engaging programme demonstrating the impact of philanthropy on student life and academic excellence.
Guests were welcomed to the Wolfson Hall for a Student Showcase featuring three postgraduate researchers whose work reflects the breadth and ambition of scholarship at Churchill today. José Escalona (G25) introduced his research into Edo-period castaway narratives, shedding new light on nineteenth-century Japanese perceptions of other cultures and the processes through which knowledge was shared and transformed. Ana Ribeiro (G23), a third-year PhD student, spoke about her research into early mammalian embryonic development. Her research contributes to a deeper understanding of the earliest stages of life and may ultimately inform advances in developmental biology and reproductive medicine. Completing the showcase was Jeremy Wilkinson (G20), whose PhD sits at the intersection of particle physics and machine learning. As a researcher on the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, Jeremy studies the fundamental building blocks of matter by analysing the vast quantities of data produced during high-energy particle collisions. The presentations sparked lively discussion, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with students and learn more about the innovative research made possible through the College’s continued support of postgraduate students.
The celebration then moved to the Jock Colville Lawn, where guests enjoyed afternoon tea accompanied by live music from the ChuJazz Collective, featuring recent Earth Sciences graduate Susanna Tredinnick (U22) on vocals and saxophone. In the summer sunshine, guests enjoyed the chance to reconnect with old friends, meet current students and experience the vibrant community their support helps to sustain. Younger visitors joined in the festivities too, painting rocks and playing lawn games.
The biennial Garden Party serves as both a heartfelt thank you to the College’s supporters and a reminder of the extraordinary achievements that their generosity helps to make possible. Through their commitment, donors continue to support the future success of Churchill College.
