Grounds & Gardens blog: 2016 Open Garden Scheme

2nd June 2016 in Grounds & Gardens, News and Events

Our Magnolia tree, Winston Churchill rose and Judas tree in bloom this spring.

The College open garden day for charity through the National Garden Scheme (NGS) was a great success.

We opened on Sunday 10 April jointly with Fitzwilliam College. We opened at 2pm and finished at 5pm and during those few hours we welcomed about 110 people which is really positive as there were quite a few other gardens open at the same time.

We managed to raise £550 for charity which is given to the NGS who distribute it at the end of the year mainly to various cancer charities last year the scheme raised nationally over £2.6 million. The weather remained dry for the day but the wind was very cold.

Open Garden Scheme 2016 visitors in the Orchid House

We have also recently had the U3A garden group visit for their annual tour of the gardens by me which they really enjoyed despite the weather which was sunshine and heavy showers and they have already asked to be booked in again for next year. Some of the main highlights they got to see were the fantastic orchids in the greenhouse and the Cherries around the graduate housing which were in full flower.
