The latest Churchill Community update

9th April 2020 in Coronavirus

During these testing times it’s reassuring to hear about all of the hard work being done by the Churchill Community to both manage and inform about the Covid-19 pandemic. Here’s what has been happening in the last few days.

Statistician Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter and social psychologist Dr Sander van der Linden have both contributed to a piece in the New York Times on embracing the uncertainty around Covid-19. Dr van der Linden has also been speaking about the fake news surrounding how to protect against catching Covid-19, and Sir David continues to follow the lockdown and death rate models (starts 11m 55s).

Head of the IfM, Professor Tim Minshall, is one of the voices in the new video from the University of Cambridge, where colleagues from around the University talk about how they are getting by in these difficult times and share their tips on what gets them through the day.

Economist Professor Diane Coyle has been writing about how we can define productivity in a pandemic. Now that coronavirus has dealt an unprecedented blow to economies everywhere, policymakers are asking how it will affect productivity at a national level. Professor Coyle has also been speaking to Newsnight about social inequality due to Covid-19 (starts 9m 50s).

Honorary Fellow, Professor Sir Paul Nurse, has been speaking about repurposing the Francis Crick Institute’s laboratory facilities as a testing facility for Covid-19.

Churchill student Charles Ebert is part of a group of a dozen faculty and PhD students at the Judge Business School working with Public Health England and the NHS in the East of England on several projects relating to responding to the coronavirus response.

Alumnus and assistant professor of immunology and infectious diseases at the Harvard Chan School, Yonatan Grad (G96), contributed to an op-ed in the Washington Post on what society needs to know before ending social distancing. He also hosted a webinar on navigating the Covid-19 pandemic.

Alumnus and Assistant Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington, Dr Alex Greninger (G04), alongside his colleague Dr Keith Jerome, raced to make thousands of tests available, hoping to stem the spread of Covid-19 in the U.S. He also spoke to GQ magazine about his struggle to get out in front of the coronavirus crisis.

We will continue to keep you informed of all of the work being done by the Churchill College Community. If you have any news you would like to share, please get in touch by emailing comms.manager@chu.cam.ac.uk.
