On Saturday 29 February, not only did Churchill student Henry Yates win the the ‘town-bike’ / non-road category at the annual inter-collegiate cuppers time trail, but he did so on a mountain bike (the only competitor to attempt such a thing)! Despite some fierce winds, Henry managed to do the out and back 10 mile route on the A1303 in 31.47.

Speaking of the event Henry said, “it was a ten mile time trial – an individual event against the clock, which is a road bike event generally. I’m a mountain biker so my bike was very unsuitable and I was the only person who attempted it on a mtb! The course was out of Bottisham, racing 5 miles down the A1303, all the way around the roundabout at the top and back again. It was windy so the return 5 miles was into a strong headwind.”

Henry is now gearing up(!) for the Varsity match against Oxford in April, and also has some cross-country races in the calendar. We look forward to hearing how he gets on.
