The latest Churchill Community update

During these testing times it’s reassuring to hear about all of the hard work being done by the Churchill Community to both manage and inform about the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as other work and achievements that have taken place. Here’s what has been happening in the last few days.


Statistician Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter continues to look at the statistics around Covid-19, and this week spoke to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme about the UK’s response to the pandemic. He also wrote a piece for the Guardian comparing the UK’s death toll to that of other countries.

Social psychologist Dr Sander van der Linden is part of a +40 author collaboration in Nature Human Behaviour relaying what broad lessons behavioural science has to offer COVID-19 pandemic response.

Staff member and research technician at the Department of Pathology, Chris Reitter, is joining the new laboratory at the University’s Anne McLaren Building that will be used for high throughput screening for COVID-19 testing.

The Møller Institute shared a tribute to the NHS by illuminating the iconic Møller Institute Tower with blue lights and the NHS logo to thank and acknowledge the incredible work of the NHS and all key workers.


Molecular Biologist Dr Sarah Teichmann has been elected Fellow of the Royal Society. She has been recognised for her pioneering computational biology and genomics work, leading to the Human Cell Atlas initiative.

Teaching Fellow Dr Alison Ming is ensuring that prospective students don’t miss out on Open Days by hosting our first ever virtual Open Day for Maths.

Student Angela Harper spoke to the Cambridge Independent about music, STEM and coxing and how those three worlds intertwine.
