The latest Churchill Community update

22nd July 2021 in Coronavirus

It has been a difficult year for us all, but news of great work undertaken by members of our community is uplifting. This includes those who are continuing to respond to the coronavirus pandemic, and those working in many other fields. Here’s what has been happening in the last few days.

PhD Student Dr Chioma Achi was selected as one of the winners of the Department of Veterinary Medicine’s Abcam research prize.

ERASMUS student, Kuan-Chun Chen, discussed his journey of resilience and self-reflection through a pandemic ridden third year at Churchill College.

Alumna Professor Catherine Green (U93) appeared on Radio 4’s Today Programme, discussing the book she co-authored with Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert called Vaxxers: The Inside Story of the Oxford AstraZeneca Vaccine and the Race Against the Virus (starts 2hr 36m).

College Head of Grounds and Gardens, John Moore, recorded a tour of our perimeter path to show how much had changed in the 5 months from December to May.

Fellow and Geographer, Dr Alice Reid, discussed childhood mortality in England and Wales in the 1850s and how maps show that little has changed in 170 years.

Statistician Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter co-authored an op-ed which discussed the different approaches used by Public Heath England to calculate averted COVID-19 deaths, and joined the World at One on BBC Radio 4 to clear up COVID-19 numbers (starts 32m 14s).

Fellow and social psychologist Dr Sander van der Linden talked to NBC Nightly News about the effect of social media misinformation on vaccine hesitancy (starts 13m 40s).

Four Churchill alumni, Professor John Deanfield (U&G69), Mr Oliver Benzecry (U80), Dr Carolyn Otley (U&G91), and Professor Catherine Green (U93), were named in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours.
