A bright and sunny Saturday in March saw the welcome return of the Churchill alumni v current students football match.

The current team were on a high, having reached the final of Cuppers for only the third time in the history of the College.

The game began as a tense affair with not much between them, with a classic goal from Jocelino Rodrigues (G16), cutting in from the right for the umpteenth time this season to curl one into the right corner, breaking the deadlock. After this the game opened up, with some uncanny substitutions from the 1st XI and a change in formation made the event good fun as everyone got to play and have some fun, whilst still maintaining that competitive edge. Notable returns from the old boys include Matthew Beazeley (U17), who managed to come in for a characteristic thwack at goal from close range, thwarted by great play from goalkeeper and captain Sagar Agrawal (U19). There was some outstanding play from Athi Chellappa (U17) who scored the only goal for the Old Boys. To seal the victory, some good play from Churchill’s current 1st team put the ball at the feet of Sam Ernest (U18), who fired in a well-guided half volley off the inside of the right post to seal a comfortable 4–1 victory, making up for the loss the year before.

After the game, everyone gathered in the buttery for a pint or two before heading off for a great curry night, which even turned out to be an excellent networking opportunity for some!  If you are a former player, and would like to join the alumni mailing list for future matches, please contact the alumni office.  The College is grateful to Sagar Agrawal (current Captain) and Matt Haslett (U04) for their organisation of the fixture and co-writing this report. We are also delighted that the current team is through to the University Cuppers final against local rivals Fitzwilliam, and encourages alumni who are based in Cambridge to come and watch.  The match will take place on Friday 29 April at Grange road, kick off will be after 6pm (please see our social media and website for confirmation of time).
