We have just opened six boxes of new material from Fladgate and Company (now Fladgate LLP), who looked after Churchill’s legal affairs from 1914 onwards. This new material mainly relates to the initial cataloguing of Churchill’s archive by the Public Record Office after the war and rights in his literary works, but also has two wonderful albums which were put together by Churchill’s solicitor Anthony Moir. Moir became a family friend, often visiting the Churchills and he created these albums with the letters and never before seen photographs recording his dealings with the family.
Besides the legal papers and albums, there is also one highly unusual item, which posed quite a challenge for our conservators: the original stamp of the Chartwell Trust, which was used on all of Sir Winston’s papers up to 1945. Spot of forgery, anyone?
