The Archives Centre has just heard with sadness of the death, on 14 March, of Hugh Lunghi, one of Churchill’s wartime interpreters in talks with Stalin, and probably the first British soldier to enter Hitler’s bunker in Berlin.

We received Hugh Lunghi’s papers in 2011, including his wartime papers from the British Military Mission to Moscow and the “Big Three” wartime conferences, with files and a book found by Lunghi in the Reich Chancellery and Hitler’s bunker, as well as photographs and other papers from Lunghi’s later career at the British Embassy in Moscow.

The catalogue to Lunghi’s papers can be found online while his obituary can be read in the Daily Telegraph.
