Answer: When it is one of the very first of the new Churchill polymer notes with a rather special and resonant number.
On Friday 25 November Professor Dame Athene Donald, Master of Churchill College, and Archives Director Allen Packwood were invited to the Bank of England by Director for Banknotes and Chief Cashier, Victoria Cleland. She presented the College with a note bearing the serial number AA01 001960, in honour of the College’s foundation in 1960 as the National and Commonwealth Memorial to Sir Winston. The note comes with a letter from Bank of England Governor Mark Carney explaining this most generous gift. It has been added to the treasures of the Archives Centre, where this Churchill on a bank note now sits alongside Winston Churchill’s unpaid bills.
