A Churchill Community Update

As the country continues to navigate the Covid-19 pandemic, the Churchill community is working as hard as ever. Whilst many members are focussed on the pandemic itself, others are continuing to be recognised for their work in other arenas. With this in mind, we’re aiming to bring you a weekly “good news” update. Here’s what has been happening in the last few days.

COVID-19

Fellow and Statistician Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter commented on the low death rate amongst young men and discussed how the population could be grouped for different stages of lockdown on BBC Newsnight (starts 9m 30s). He has also been appointed as a non-executive board member of the UK Statistics Authority.

Social psychologist Dr Sander van der Linden commented on the need to change social norms to encourage the wearing of face masks, and discussed Covid-19 conspiracy theories

Economist Professor Diane Coyle has written an article for Nature about how the immediate priorities for economists are understanding the consequences of the Covid-19 crisis for public finances and international trade.

Alumna Rosanne Gray (U98) spoke to the College about her role as CEO of In Kind Direct, an organisation that provides life essential products to charity members, and how she and her team are navigating the demands on their services during the pandemic.

Fellow and Group Director of Assessment Research and Development at Cambridge Assessment, Tim Oates, has been speaking about the national standard for this summer’s exam results now that Covid-19 has prevented final exams from taking place. He has also joined the advisory board at Sparx.

Churchill College was one of the sites in the final chapter of the Cambridge ‘Make it Blue’ campaign, which saw over 20 famous landmarks lit up around the city over 9 weeks. The theme for our week was ‘Community’ and allowed us to celebrate our College members and thank frontline workers for all they have done and continue to do in the fight against Covid-19.

We will continue to keep you informed of all of the work being done by the Churchill College Community. If you have any news you would like to share, please get in touch by emailing comms.manager@chu.cam.ac.uk.
