The creation of a new fund to support public access to the Churchill Papers and related collections at the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge was announced today by its Director, Allen Packwood.
The Jennie Churchill Fund, named for Sir Winston Churchill’s great-granddaughter, is now open to support innovative projects by researchers, students and schools.

“I am deeply honoured to have my name associated with this new fund and look forward to hearing about the many exciting projects that it will make possible. I know it will mean that we can do more in terms of actively encouraging and supporting projects based on the Churchill collection, and I am thrilled that the College is today announcing several new initiatives to kick start this process.”
The new funding initiatives available will:
- Enable researchers to travel and stay in Cambridge.
- Help researchers purchase individual subscriptions to the Churchill Archive Online (the digital edition of the Churchill Papers collection).
- Help Churchill students travel or attend events associated with modern history, international relations or politics, and students from other universities to attend such events at Churchill College.
- Provide funding for schools with a Churchill related project (based on the Churchill Archive for Schools website), enabling teachers to enhance the classroom experience.
Grants will be made at the discretion of the Director of the Archives Centre and will be announced and awarded twice a year, on 1 July and 1 January. Submissions for 1 January must be made by 31 October, and for 1 June by 30 April. There is a total of £5000 funding available within any given year (see www.chu.cam.ac.uk/archives/about/research-grants for more information).
The Fund is the brainchild of Laurence Geller CBE, Chairman of the International Churchill Society, who said:
“The International Churchill Society exists to promote interest in the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill. We have a vested interest in ensuring that the Churchill Archives reach the widest possible audience and that Churchill continues to inform education, scholarship and debate. I want the fund to send a strong signal that Churchill is relevant to the next generation.”
