CCBC was delighted to unveil and name a new women’s eight on Friday 30 November.
The new Stampfli was named Shall we fly and was kindly donated by Benefactor Fellow of Churchill, Lydia Luckevich and the Luckevich-Pinchin family. Lydia’s late husband Donald Pinchin was an alumnus of Churchill, having studied for a PhD at the College in the mid-seventies. Lydia, who resides in Canada visited Cambridge, especially for the event.
Shall we fly joins Shall we dance which was donated by the family as the men’s first eight just over two years ago. The names refer to the song Shall we dance from the musical ‘The King & I’ which was one of Don’s favourite songs.
Shall we fly competed in the Fairbairn’s race on 30 November with a crew composed of the first women with four returning alumni. The crew beat a couple of men’s first eights in their division and were the seventh fastest College crew. Overall it was a successful Fairbairn’s for Churchill, with the first men being the joint eighth fastest College crew, and all the novice boats doing well in spite of difficult weather conditions on Thursday 29 November when their races took place.
The Club overall expressed its immense gratitude to Lydia and the Luckevich-Pinchin family. It has also had a successful term’s preparation for bumps next year, thanks to superb organisation from overall Captain Thomas Upton and the men’s and women’s captains, Ross Tooley and Nai Weston, and the novice captains and coaches.
We look forward to seeing both boats fly into the opposition during Lent Bumps!
