England may be out of the World Cup, but Churchill’s postgraduate men’s football team finished their season on a high.

The team had three really big wins this season: 5-0 over Jesus (who were last year’s champions), 9-0 over Engineering (in the semifinal of the cup), and 8-1 over St Johns (our first match of the season). In the final of the cup, Stefan Thomson scored with 5 minutes remaining in regular time to level the score at 1-1 and send the match to extra time. In extra time, Jocelino Rodrigues scored 2 (collecting man of the match honours) and Sam Power added a third, giving Churchill a 4-1 win. Another nice accomplishment for the team was a friendly against the University third team, which we unfortunately lost in the last minute 1-0, with Rob Murphy as man of the match.

We also had a few individual awards/positions. Sam Power was joint captain with Andrew Celsus. Our leading goalscorer was Robert ‘Big Rob’ Murphy with ten goals over the course of the season and the cup. Anton Isopoussu (former MCR member) was our defensive player of the year and Miguel El Guendy (future MCR member) was our offensive player of the year. James Godsall and Julian Vigil were our two newcomers of the year.
