A dinner was held in the Cockcroft Room last month in honour of Mr Woon Wing Yip, who supports three studentships per year at Churchill for students from Tsinghua and Peking Universities.

The studentship supports MPhil students, in conjunction with the Cambridge Trusts, and has been in existence for over ten years. In that time it has assisted many students, making stronger connections between Churchill and China through bringing students to the UK and also through travel awards for UK students to visit China, open to undergraduates.

Mr Wing Yip attended the dinner along with his nephew Henry Yap and Barbara Grainger representing his company, which is the leading supplier of oriental ingredients and food in the UK. The three recipients of the studentships this year are Hehua Xia, Keqi Chen and Zhenghxun Chen. They all spoke about how this provided an amazing opportunity as they would not have been able to study at Cambridge without this financial support.

At the reception before dinner one of the students, Alice Garner , a fourth year Asian and Middle Eastern Studies undergraduate, spoke about how the Wing Yip undergraduate travel grant had enabled her to visit Chengdu and Shanghai during her year abroad.
