Ben is currently a PhD student, studying geometric group theory in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. Groups emerge naturally in the study of symmetries of objects arising across mathematics, but a general group can be extremely badly behaved. However, by introducing geometry to this problem-for example by realising the group as the group of symmetries of an space with a nice negative curvature property-one can sometimes say much more.

Previously, Ben studied mathematics at the University of Cambridge, receiving BA and MMath degrees in 2014.
