In addition to being an Admissions Tutor, Nick is a physical geographer specialising in ecosystem development, with a special interest in high-latitude regions. He did his PhD at the University of Edinburgh, investigating long-term ecological change on lava flows in Iceland. He subsequently worked on ecological development at smaller spatiotemporal scales, studying the colonisation of historic building stone by microorganisms at the University of Oxford. His current research focuses on the biogeography of soil microbial communities, and the analysis of volcanic ash layers preserved in soils
