Over the past three years, Churchill College netball has grown from strength to strength, now being one of the most successful colleges in the university when it comes to netball.
Churchill offers both a ladies and a mixed netball team and welcomes all levels of experience! Churchill netball consists of weekly training and weekend matches. During Lent term, we also have an annual staff vs students match which is great fun and we finish our swift netball play with cake in the bar! All of the Cambridge colleges also compete in a cuppers tournament held at the end of Lent term – 2018 will be our year (watch this space)!
If you still need more convincing, Churchill netball is notable for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. You will truly become part of a team and it’s a great way to get to know other years in college. We also hold an annual hand-over formal in Easter term, where captaincy is passed over for the next year. This is also a perfect excuse to celebrate what would certainly have been an incredibly successful year for Churchill in sport!
Ladies: Holly Platt-Higgins and Sara Anderson
Mixed: Luke Baines
Oh, how far Churchill netball has come! Holly and Sara’s hard work and dedication as captains (putting on weekly training sessions) and another fabulous intake of fresher’s has meant Churchill ladies netball now sit in division one! The ladies team have only suffered one defeat thus far, a 2-point difference against John’s 1st. The Churchill ladies team are looking in a very strong position for the cuppers tournament which will take place at the end of Lent term!
Luke has also been providing energy and motivation to his team in the form of weekly inspirational songs of his choosing! After moving up to the first division, it’s looking like Churchill’s mixed team are there to stay, remaining undefeated in Michaelmas and only suffering two defeats in Lent.
Ladies: Emilia Persson and Jenni Shuttleworth
Mixed: Zeeshan Mitha
This was a poignant year for Churchill netball. After welcoming talented and keen fresher’s, it soon became clear that Churchill ladies netball team had what it takes to move up to division one. After our first victory against Fitzwilliam, it was looking like nothing would stop us. But, it was a cheeky over-head from Johns 2nds, which ensured we stayed firmly at the top of the second division.
In terms of the mixed netballers, this team faced great success. Remaining undefeated throughout the entire year, now moving from third division up to pole position!
Ladies: Emma Sharples and Mimi Evagora-Campbell
During their tenure as captains, Emma and Mimi worked hard for the ladies team to retain their position within division two of the Cambridge Colleges. With exceptional wins against; Medwards, Queens and Selwyn. Our loss against Fitzwilliam created the now notorious rivalry between the two colleges (all friendly of course)!
