While not a Fellow of the College, The Visitor is an important role at the College, to which Lord Sales was invested in 2025.
Lord Sales (Philip Sales) was educated at the Royal Grammar School in Guildford; Churchill College, Cambridge (BA 1983) and Worcester College, Oxford (BCL 1984).
He was called to the Bar, Lincoln’s Inn, 1985; barrister, 1986-2008; First Treasury Junior Counsel (Common Law), 1997-2006; Assistant Recorder, 1999-2001; Recorder, 2001-08; Deputy High Court Judge, 2004-08; QC, 2006; First Treasury Counsel (Common Law), 2006-08; a Judge of the High Court of Justice, Chancery Division, 2008-14; Member of the Panel of Chairmen, Competition Appeal Tribunal, 2008-2019; Deputy Chairman of the Boundary Commission for England, 2009-2014; Vice-President of the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, 2014-2015; Lord Justice of Appeal, 2014-2019; Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom 2019-. He has been appointed to become the Deputy President of the Supreme Court, effective January 2026.
Lord Sales’s interests include theatre, film, opera, reading, open-water swimming, hiking. He has contributed numerous articles to law journals and books.
He was elected as an Honorary Fellow of Churchill College on the 23rd January 2015 and represented the College at many events during his tenure.
