Ergin obtained a BA in English Language Teaching and Linguistics at Bogazici University, Turkey, in 2007. Following an MA in Sociolinguistics at Rouen University, Ergin pursued a joint PhD in General Linguistics at Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3 and University of Bamberg. His PhD, awarded in 2013, investigated the syntax and prosody of pronominal clitics in Central Kurdish.

After holding several research and teaching positions at Bamberg, Uppsala, Bogazici, and University of Kurdistan-Hewler, Ergin joined the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at Cambridge in 2022 as a research associate in a project on the reconstruction of the linguistic history of minorities in the Middle East. He has published on sociolinguistics and structure of Kurdish and Iranian languages. Outside of work, Ergin enjoys dancing Tango and learning Latin and Arabic.
