Mengfan Guo is the Goldsmiths’ Early Career Research Fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. He studies polar materials for energy and information applications, with a focus on the static and dynamic arrangement of dipoles where interesting electrical/dielectric, thermal, magnetic, and optical properties emerge. His discovery of toroidal polar topologies in seemingly disordered polymers overturned conventional wisdom about polar ordering in soft materials.
He obtained a PhD in 2021 studying ferroelectric polymers, and a BS in 2016, at the School of Materials Science and Engineering in Tsinghua University. He has been recognized as an Outstanding Graduate in Beijing, a Tsinghua Top Academic Talent, and a recipient of Excellent Doctor Degree Dissertation in Beijing and in Tsinghua University.
