Sir John Boyd tree dedication

On 10 April 2026 the College held a special event to celebrating the life and legacy of Sir John Boyd, who served as the fifth Master of Churchill College from 1996 to 2006. A distinguished diplomat and former Ambassador to Japan, Sir John brought a unique perspective to the role of Master and helped forge new connections that enriched the College community.

To honour his decade of leadership and service, the College dedicated 4 great white cherry blossom trees (Prunus ‘Tai-haku) within the College grounds, creating a lasting and fitting tribute to his influence and his ties to Japan.

Members of the Boyd family, along with Fellows, former staff and alumni, gathered for the dedications ceremony. Guests heard personal reflections from Professor Mark Goldie, Professor Alison Finch, and Lady Julia Boyd, recalling Sir John’s contribution to the College and the wider community. The event also featured an evocative musical performance by alumna Rachel Stott (U87), who performed her original composition Cherry Blossom Wand.

The newly dedicated area, located outside Seminar Rooms 3 and 4, is intended as a place of peace and reflection for members of the College community to enjoy.

About the Trees

Prunus ‘Tai-haku’, great white cherry once considered extinct and presumed to exist only in historical depictions, a stroke of luck led to the discovery of a specimen thriving in a garden in Sussex in the 1920s. This chance encounter allowed the revival of this lost beauty and now all specimens worldwide trace their roots back to this singular tree discovered in Sussex.
