Welcoming Churchill College’s new undergraduates

One of the most rewarding aspects of life at Churchill College is welcoming our new cohort of students. Each new member of our community – arriving with their individual talents, passions, and experiences – makes a genuine difference to who we are.

One of the most rewarding aspects of life at Churchill College is welcoming our new cohort of students. Each new member of our community – arriving with their individual talents, passions, and experiences – makes a genuine difference to who we are.

Churchill’s undergraduate entrants this year are from a wide range of backgrounds, reflecting the rich variety that characterises our community. While the majority of Churchill College’s entrants are always STEM students, we are well-represented in the Humanities too, with over a quarter of new entrants studying  arts, humanities and social science subjects. As a large college, there are always many students studying each discipline across the year groups, meaning our new entrants can look forward to joining a large and thriving community, whatever their subject.

One thing that unites all Churchill students, regardless of background, is their exceptional academic achievement, and this year’s cohort are no exception. Amongst those who’ve taken A Levels (the most common qualification among Cambridge undergraduates), the average arts, humanities and social sciences entrant has achieved at least A*A*A, while our new STEM students have achieved at least three A*s on average, many even better.

The College is eager to ensure that academic ability is the only barrier to studying at Churchill, not background, personal circumstances or the other factors that can discourage some students from applying. It is therefore very heartening to see that 24% of new UK students this year come from areas of significant socioeconomic disadvantage, as indicated by the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). This exceeds the University’s target for the 2025-2026 intake, as set out in the new Access and Participation Plan, and indeed is only one percentage point short of the target set for the end of that plan in 2029!

We are delighted to be welcoming such a diverse and academically outstanding group of undergraduates and look forward to supporting and encouraging them in the next stage of their academic adventures. Students will be well-supported by our excellent Tutorial team, as well as our Wellbeing Co-ordinator, College Nurse and personal tutors, all of whom are looking forward to meeting our newest members.
