On Saturday 6 May the College hosted another of our annual football matches between current students and alumni. Matt Haslett (U04), who organised the game, provides us with a match report.
Despite the rather wet weather, a great game was had. The current Churchill team had the most of the first half, taking a 1–0 lead into the break. The old boys grew into the game in the second half, equalising when Sam Ernest (U18) headed in at the back post from a Matt Haslett corner (after the latter had missed a number of chances to score, and certainly appears to have lost his killer instincts of yesteryear!). The even second half continued, but the current team snuck ahead again through sheer weight of numbers in the box. With a few minutes left, Matt Haslett finally put in a decent cross after a through ball and Rob Smyth (U&G14) tucked away to earn a 2-2 draw.
Penalties followed, with Rob Smyth and Pete Cherns (G03) scoring, and Ben Andrews (U04) and Mike Gough (U15) drawing good saves from the keeper (or missing, as it’s actually called!), while the current team scored all their pens to take it.
Rocks of the team were centre backs Chris Glover (U03) and Sam Ernest , with Sam taking Man of the Match due to his goal.
Thanks to all that came to play and filled in various positions as needed. Special mention to oldest old boy and captain for the day, Frank Kienhofer (G02), who came over from Holland and played a half before doing in his calf when moving slightly at the start of the second half.
